Reclaimed by the Sea

Atlantic Wall fortifications along the coast of Denmark

About the project

While working on my project Festung, my interest in the Atlantic Wall grew. I decided that I wanted to visit the remains of fortifications in more countries. In October 2018 I planned a trip to Denmark and followed the coastline of Jutland from Vigsø to Søndervig.

The concrete structures of the Atlantic Wall are built according to a standardized design. I recognized the bunkers in Denmark from my project in The Netherlands, but due to coastal erosion many of the fortifications are now reclaimed by the sea. It's an almost surreal sight but also a comforting thought. The Atlantic Wall was supposed to protect Nazi Germany for a thousand years, but the bunkers are now slowly destroyed by the sea.
