Water as a Weapon

The New Dutch Inundation Line was a line of water based defences. Through a complex system of dikes and sluices parts of the country could be flooded (inundated). This should prevent the enemy to advance to the economically important western part of Holland. The water level was only 30 to 60 centimeters. This was too deep to wade and shallow enough to rule out effective use of boats. Fortifications and bunkers served to protect the weaker sections of the line.

De Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie was een verdedigingslinie gebaseerd op water. Via een complex systeem van sluizen en dijken konden delen van het land gecontroleerd onder water gezet worden (geïnundeerd). Dit moest de vijand beletten om door te stoten naar het economisch belangrijke westelijk deel van Nederland. Het waterpeil bedroeg slechts 30 tot 60 centimeter. Dit was te diep om te doorwaden en te ondiep om te bevaren. Forten en bunkers diende om de zwakkere delen in de linie te beveiligen.
